The dangle test

At some point or another, almost everything
that Zach comes into contact with will have to pass
his "dangle test."
This highly sophisticated test measures how
well an item will dangle from his pincer grip
WHILE he sucks his thumb and shakes it
up and down...
It's a very serious test, as you can see.

Nap confusion...

We are still trying to work out this nap thing...Zach is all over the board with naps--sometimes he only takes an hour nap in the morning and nothing else. Sometimes two and a half hours in the morning and another half hour in the afternoon. Sometimes he's asleep by a little after 1000 am, and other times, he makes it till 1100.

So I'm not really sure if we're dropping a nap or not. We're trying to play it by ear, but it's a bit tricky...especially since he has had a few GRUMPY days (teeth??)--we don't want to push our luck with the sleep issue too much.

Daddy long legs, part 2

Here's what I found...

Looks like we're ok either way. Which is good, since I loved playing with daddy long legs when I was a kid. :)

I hope it's true what they say about daddy long legs...

not being able to bite people because their mouths are too small...because Zachary, old eagle-eye, as I like to call him, likes to find daddy long legs spiders on the tree and try to poke them with his finger. Of course, they run away from him and no one gets hurt.

It's really amazing that he can find them, because they blend in so well with the tree bark!

I'm off to research daddy long legs....

Naps. Or not.

I think that Zachary is dropping one of his daily naps.

Starting Thursday, his afternoon nap - if it existed at all, consisted of approximately 20 minutes. So I started thinking that maybe he's ready to drop a nap, which involves shifting his whole schedule somewhat so that he's not awake from about 1130 am to 800 pm....which is WAY too long for all involved.

Yesterday, we moved his morning nap 15 minutes later - to 1030. And he slept until about 1230. Then we moved bedtime up 30 minutes to 730. And it seemed to work pretty well...except for when he woke up at 945 pm and did NOT want to go back to sleep. Eventually, after a bottle, he did, and slept great until 730 this morning. I think our ultimate goal for the nap is to go from 1200-200 or something like that...so we'll see how it goes.

Pickled asparagus

That's the newest weird food that Zachary likes.

The other nite, his dinner consisted of: 3 grapes, 2 club sticks crackers, a bunch of other stuff thrown on the floor, and several stalks of pickled asparagus.

It's in the running for healthiest dinner of the year.

Who knew?

Shots are NO fun!

Today was Zachary's one year doctor's appointment--where he got not ONE, not TWO, not THREE, not even FOUR, but FIVE shots!!!! Luckily, he's now done with shots until kindergarten (which I know will be here in about four seconds).

So his stats:
Weight: 19 pounds, 9 ounces (10th percentile, gained weight now that he's healthy)
Height: 28 inches (5th percentile, tho maybe not entirely accurate, as he was squiggling quite a bit)
Head circumfrence: 47 centimeters (unknown percentile, but probably a huge melon)

Other than the shots, the appointment was very business as usual. Zach is making just the right progress socially and physically, and Dr. T said we should go ahead and keep trying milk as very few children actually have milk allergies...so we'll do it. He also said that we can turn the car seat around as soon as Zach reaches 20 pounds, so that will be exciting to do in the next month or so.

Dr. T also said that the hardest part is behind us, so we're good to go for number two.



I about fell on the floor laughing hysterically.

Coming home

A year ago today, we brought the tiny bundle known as Zachary James home with us for the first time.

I remember being overwhelmed by emotions and fear and hormones on the way home...and cried from the time we left the hospital and all of our nursing assistance, till we got home. And then I cried some more. I really couldn't believe that they would let us go home with this precious cargo that we knew nothing about taking care of.

Funny how a year changes things.

Now we don't have to worry about him growing up an imbecile, unable to read or write or do trigonometry (at least that's what the JC Penney photographer was telling us would happen if he didn't crawl)....

And for the record, it's super cute. : )
